Merritt Oakland is a neighborhood located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, in Alameda County, California. The population was 16,643 at the 2010 census.

The area that is now Merritt Oakland was originally part of Rancho San Antonio, granted in 1837 by Mexican Governor José Figueroa to Captain William Richardson and his wife, Delia. In 1841, Richardson sold the ranch to John D. Sloat. The area later became known as "Richardson's Addition" to San Francisco.

In 1881, at the height of the Gold Rush era, southern Alameda County was split off from northern Alameda County and renamed Merritt after Colonel John W. Merritt (1822-1891), a hero of the Mexican–American War and early settler of California. The eastern boundary of Merritt corresponds to what is now Central Avenue in downtown Oakland.
